Day Twenty-One: Voyage of the Oaken Inkwell - '22 Bulletin

Updated: Nov 25, 2022

“For if a man is capable of confronting death daily... There is no telling what else that man can do.” ― Blackbeard

The fight was as valiant a merchant ship's crew could give, but the end was inevitable. The pirate captain strolls the deck, sneering at your exhausted crewmates. "Fine ship ye got here," he waves his cutlass lazily. "Yer crew can go below to the hold– or the sea'll be happy to welcome you." Dare: You grip the rail of the deck by the plank and hope the pirate doesn't come closer. He locks eyes with you, and before you know it, the cold steel of his cutlass presses through your sweat-drenched shirt. "Captain?" You squeeze your eyes shut as you shift toward the gangplank. Write with your eyes closed for 3 minutes. Ambiance: "Walk," the pirate growls. The waves crash past your face and the warm water tightens around you as you fight to keep your breath. The depths rush past your ears in a briny roar. You pray silently as bubbles stream away from you.

Prompt: There's not much you can do as you strain to keep air in your lungs. Is this the end? You try to scream with your final exhale. Put your character under pressure so great they feel as though they are drowning. Question: How does your character's response to pressure shape the conflict around them?
