Day Twenty-Five: Voyage of the Oaken Inkwell - '22 Bulletin

“Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.”

- Voltaire

The next thing you know, you've been pulled out of the water and into the air. You choke and splutter, unable to breathe for the water you'd inhaled. You feel more exhausted than you ever had before in your life and so weak you can scarcely move.

Dare

A handful of your crewmates surround you. A couple are bent over you, and the other is staring out towards the Oaken Inkwell– tiny and flanked jealously by the pirate ship. All at once, the water churns vigorously, and in your dazed state you realize that the hydra has returned. Attempt to write 500 words in 5 minutes, no matter the cost.

Ambiance

The seawater pours off the mighty heads of the hydra and he gurgles at seeing you. The sea hadn't killed you, but now the hydra would for sure! "Friend hydra," one of your crewmates begins, speaking clearly through the creaking boat and softly lapping waters.

Prompt

"The pirates have wine," he continues. "I smelled it on their breath! If you help us, you can have all the pirate wine you want!"

To your amazement, the hydra concedes. Hoping on a hydra, you think. Now that's a first. Write about the hope that keeps your characters going through their most desperate hours.

Question

In what ways have your characters learned to hold on to hope as your story has progressed?
