“It is not the ship so much as the skillful sailing that assures the prosperous voyage.”
― George William Curtis
Just as you had settled into life aboard a ship, excitement decides to set in. The waters around your ship begin to churn like boiling broth. Ocean spray slaps your face and the ship rolls ferociously beneath your feet. Great scales begin to emerge from the ocean froth– you make out just a glimpse of a massive, snake-like head mere moments before it bursts through the foam in an explosion of seawater.
Dare:
This beastly creature doesn't have just one head– another head rises to tower above you, and another, and another! Before you can blink, fifty massive heads are glaring down at you with a mischievous gleam, ready to smash your boat to smithereens for the barrels of rum you carry! Do your best to write 500 words in 5 minutes.
Ambiance:
The captain calls the full crew up on deck to face the hydra. "Hydras," he explains to you in a hushed voice, "Believe the more heads a hydra has, the wiser they are." The beastly creature screeches as the crew of the Oaken Inkwell assemble to stand their ground.
Prompt:
"So you want rum, do you?" The captain bellows. The hydra screeches in agreement. "Surely, a magnificent beast like yourself would be more interested in a more civilized drink?" The hydra cocks its heads. It had always followed the trade routes of ships carrying rum. "The wine of the coastal vineyards is superb, my friend! Perhaps you can find some pirate ships to stalk for it." Have some of your characters strike a trade deal of some sort.
Question:
What is something your character desires, but will find something better in its place by the end of the story?
