Day Fourteen: Voyage of the Oaken Inkwell - '22 Bulletin

“Wind is to us what money is to life on shore.”

― Sterling Hayden

After days lost in the storm, the sudden hot and sticky silence has your crewmates murmuring about doldrums. The crystal blue waves are eerily still, and the heat radiates off the water. You swear the pine pitch that seals the boat has begun to melt. The air is feverish.

Prompt:

“The doldrums,” the captain grumbles, his kind eyes narrowed with concern against the great beads of sweat rolling off his brow. “Pray for another storm, men. And pray it takes us out of these wretched straits.” If you squint, you can see another ship off in the distance, almost lost between the perfect blue of the sky and sea. The sails hang limply from the mast in the perfect absence of breeze. Write about your characters losing the wind in their sails.

Ambiance:

Your crewmates make the most of the calm seas, though their worry is hidden under every smile. As the sun sets in a blaze of red and gold, some of them take out some instruments and play to the wide-open sky to take your minds off the troubles for awhile.

Dare:

As the moon reaches its zenith, a whisper of a breeze brushes your hair in your face. It’s barely enough to ripple the water, much less flutter the sagging sails, but it’s something. Maybe by morning the wind will return in full force and carry you onwards. Participate in 3 Word Wars, and try to outdo your total each time.

Question:

Everyone has something that threatens to bring them down, to stop them in their tracks or make them give up all together. A constant adversary, thought, fear, or possibility that lingers over their shoulder. What is something that constantly threatens your character's progress?
