“To reach a port, we must set sail. Sail, not tie at anchor. Sail, not drift.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
A length of rope fastened around the hydra’s breast, your little lifeboat is skimming along at astonishing speed toward the distant Oaken Inkwell. Your heart beats faster as the ship looms larger on the horizon. “I sssssmell the wine,” the hydra hisses quietly, slipping beneath the surface of the ocean.
Dare
Within a few short minutes, you and your crewmates find yourself beneath the shadow of the hull. You let slip the hydra from the rope harness and stare up at the lip of the vessel with a gulp. The only way you can scale it is plank by plank. Complete the Word Crawl for the Motivationally Challenged.
Ambiance
Your fingers grip as tight as possible to the planks of the hull. The ship creaks on the gentle rolling of the sea. You can hear the pirate captain calling to the greater half of his crew. It almost sounds… normal.
Prompt
Just as you reach the base of the rail, the water between the Oaken Inkwell and the pirate vessel begins to boil and thrash. “20 of you, defend the Black Horse! The rest, hold your position!” The pirate crew is no match for the hydra, and your crewmates are able to take the Oaken Inkwell once again! Write about the one thing victory depends on.
Question
Your character has come far since the first page, facing things that would effect them in good ways and in bad. In what ways have they grown and declined?
